? Profile

Philippe Borremans holds a Public Relations degree from the INIREP,
(Institut International des Relations Publiques) and started his business communications career at Porter Novelli International, a global public relations firm in 1995.

During his 4 year stay as a Public Relations Consultant he worked for organizations like Federal Express, Iomega, Monsanto and the Association of Plastic Manufacturers in Europe. While at Porter Novelli he managed national and international public relations programs ranging from pure media relations to EC related influencer programs on a European level.

In 1997 he started to specialize in crisis communications and in - what was then called ”online PR”. His crisis communications experience covers union strikes, an airplane crash, a flame site and product recalls.

During 1998 he worked in the offices of the agency in Boston for some time to gain experience in the latest web developments and how these were applied to traditional public relations. Since then, applying the web and related technologies as communications and collaboration tools has been his passion.

In October 1999 - just in time for Y2K - he was asked to join IBM Belgium in the function of Public Relations Manager for the IBM Global Services business unit. After one year he was asked to hold the responsibility for all external communications of all IBM business units in Belgium & Luxembourg.

During the next 4 years he managed media relations and influencer programs for the company around a multitude of subjects ranging from innovation, diversity to healthcare & the environment over virtual worlds and their business impact.

From 2005 onwards he held a European coordination role for IBM's online communications activities and the use of social media in the context of public relations. He managed a virtual team of 7 colleagues across Europe and became one of IBM's “evangelists”, often speaking at international conferences and C-level client meetings.

Next to IBM Philippe started his own training & consulting company in 2005. In this capacity he coached PR and marketing professionals on the use of social media & provided media training for business executives.

In January 2008 Philippe took a leave from IBM and created Blackline, a social media agency together with Leads United, a leading Belgian Public Relations company.

The agency helped clients implement and use social media like blogs, wikis, podcasting, videocasting, RSS feeds etc.. in the context of internal, external and crisis communications.

In January 2009 Philippe decided to go his own way and returned part time to IBM were he briefly took on the role as a social media specialist.

In June 2009 has was asked to take on the role of Chief Social Media Officer at the Van Marcke Group of companies, a Belgian holding with several companies active in different sectors like wholesale, retail & manufacturing. The group is active worldwide and employs 1600 employees.

In his capacity of Chief Social Media Officer, reporting to the founders of the group, Philippe is responsible for all online communications, internal and external and for the roll out of social media within the group in the context of business communications & collaboration.

Philippe is a founding member & member of the board of the International Association of Online Communicators, a full member of the European Association of Communications Directors and a member of 3C, the Belgian Corporate Communications Community.

Philippe speaks English, French and Dutch. He is an avid Blogger and comments on social media, society, history and anything in between on http://www.conversationblog.com

"The "Blogging, RSS and New Media" seminar is a great initial kick-off for SMEs to join the new media era. The course provides a realistic view of today and tomorrow’s media landscape and allows businesses to develop their own point of view. Outsource (www.outsource.be) will certainly give the matter further thought and translate this into an integrated communication policy. Through this, Outsource proves to be one of the agencies at the forefront of new media.

"You can find a lot of information on the Internet about blogging and RSS. A quick google search will lead you to jungle of information. However, a session of Philippe Borremans provides you a clear insight within 30 minutes. Blogs aren't diaries of lonely souls, but a very powerful communication and marketing instrument. I also learned that RSS is not only usefull for media tracking, but it's also a tool to generate more traffic to your own website. To get started yourself, Philippe advises you"   more...

"As part of my work within the central web team at the World Health Organization in Geneva, my job is to explore new technologies and/or developments on the web and make recommendations internally, which then find their way into best practices, policies, guidelines... While "corporate blogging" was in everyone's mouth, we were lacking a clear picture, and had no real experience from which to predict how such a means of communication would be useful to an intergovernmental organization such as our"   more...

"Primo: Beeing a marketing-communication agency we had a special request from a potential client to brainstorm on a global communication plan, PR included. PR is not our core business and we knew Phils expertise and reputation in this domain. So, we worked together on this project. Thanks to Phils help, advice and consulting we had an excellent presentation with creative ideas on PR...and maybe soon a new client.

Secundo: It's thanks to Phils enthusiasm about blogging that we set up our SPIN H"   more...

"Our PR team took on Phillippe Borremans for a profound introduction to the phenomena of blogging and RSS. We enjoyed the time we spent with Phillippe, especially because he has an in-depth knowledge and is very passionate about the subject. Because we were mostly interested in the usability of blogging and RSS for communication professionals, this was also the focus of his introduction. We must honestly admit, we had ample questions already about blogging, and so time passed by. This way we spen"   more...
