Review #2079
I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. John Luo for the last
several years, both as a resident on his service in the Consultation and
Liaison rotation in my second year in residency, as well as for individual therapy
supervision spanning my second, third and fourth years of residency.
On the C&L service, Dr. Luo did an excellent job of balancing clinical
work with didactic teaching. He made rounds informative and
entertaining, often extending his teaching beyond rounds into informal
case discussions and engrossing conversations. He accompanied residents
to patient interactions and did on-site, case-by-case teaching that made
the situations memorable and interesting. He was always available
throughout the day for in-person-staffing and made himself available to
residents 24/7 for patient questions or additional supervision.
Through weekly therapy supervision, I have had even more of an
opportunity to be exposed to Dr. Luo’s teaching style. He is
encouraging, enthusiastic, warm, supportive and always a wealth of
information. He uses patient examples, anecdotes, personal stories and
evidenced based literature in a seamless approach to resident
supervision. Over the past year, he has not only taught me a tremendous
amount about the therapy process and my individual patient, but he has
helped me gain courage and confidence in my abilities as a therapist.
Moreover, Dr. Luo has gone above and beyond his role as attending and
supervisor and served as a career mentor. He has spent long hours with
me discussing my professional development, given me and other residents
information on scholarship and fellowship applications, introduced me to
researchers in my field of interest, involved me in speaking at the APA,
and has supported my career and my achievements. Finally, his interest
in technology and its application to psychiatric practice have been
inspirational, and he has taught me a great deal about the intersection
of psychiatry and technological innovation.
In summary, Dr. John Luo has taught me a tremendous amount about the field of psychiatry, my patients, and myself as a practitioner. He is among the finest clinicians I have had the opportunity to work with at UCLA, and I would highly recommend him without hesitation.
