After completing his post-graduate education, Stephan Hittmann entered the workforce, working in local, national and international positions, eventually accepting the position of Executive Director/Chief Learning Officer within the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). In that capacity, Stephan Hittmann was dedicated to leading the Department in its efforts to serve and protect the people of New York City through expanded access to training and education. In that role, Stephan Hittmann oversaw training and education for over 11,000 firefighters and fire officers, approximately 3,000 paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and thousands more dispatchers, fire inspectors, and civilian support personnel.
During Stephan Hittmann’s tenure with FDNY, among its many other roles, the Department provided thousands of fire safety events to the citizens of New York. Additionally, tens of thousands of fires were extinguished, thousands of fires were investigated for their cause and origin, and EMS units responded to an average of one million pre-hospital medical emergencies on an annual basis. Such statistics are a mark of pride for Stephan Hittmann, whose first priority is the security of the citizens of New York. Stephan Hittmann's pride also extends to the Department’s personnel, whose bravery has carried them through many dangerous situations in the interest of protecting New York.
Subsequent to his role at FDNY, Stephan Hittmann became President of the 911 FUND, the position in which he continues to serve today. Established after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the 911 FUND consists of professional first responders and emergency medical service professionals who, like Stephan Hittmann, without financial compensation for their efforts, provide emergency relief services and supplies on a global basis, most recently in Haiti within days of their devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010. The foremost objectives of Stephan Hittmann and other 911 FUND members are to maintain safety, increase preparedness, and reduce risk from fires and other types of emergencies. Stephan Hittmann and the 911 FUND have worked to enhance safety by donating emergency equipment and vehicles, such as fire trucks, to Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, South Africa, and many other countries.
In furtherance of his lifelong community involvement, Stephan Hittmann serves as a volunteer Trustee with organizations such as the Henry Street Settlement’s Boys & Girls Republic, Vision Urbana, Camp Wabenaki, the Young Adult Institute, and the New York State Surrogate Decision-Making Committee.
