Since July 2008, lifelong educator and academic leader Jane K. Fernandes has served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Chief Academic Officer) for the University of North Carolina at Asheville. In this role, Jane K. Fernandes has maintained oversight for all facets of academia at UNC Asheville, including 40 majors, 30 concentrations, enrollment services, the college library, institutional research, student support services, and more. With an overall focus on student success, Jane K. Fernandes ensures a high degree of academic quality for the 3,500-plus undergraduates and 25 Master’s candidates at UNC Asheville through the effective hiring, management, professional development, and evaluations of the school’s faculty. In addition, Jane K. Fernandes has proven instrumental in the development of a Craft Studies program for UNC Asheville and currently leads the university's effort to achieve reaffirmation of accreditation from the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.
Aside from her responsibilities at UNC Asheville, Jane K. Fernandes holds a Senior Fellowship from the Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina. Earning induction to this organization in December 2006, Jane K. Fernandes works on a wide range of projects that influence public policy, public awareness, and educational efforts to increase inclusion and diversity in the workplace and elsewhere. Over the course of her tenure with the Diversity and Inclusion Institute, Jane K. Fernandes has presented keynote speeches at such conferences as the Chief Diversity Officers Forum and the United Way Inclusion Roundtable.
Prior to these roles, Jane K. Fernandes spent more than 10 years on staff at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where she served as President Designate, Provost, Chief Academic Officer, and Vice President of the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. Other positions held by Jane K. Fernandes include Director of the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind, Coordinator and Instructor of the Sign Language Interpreter Education Program at Kapiolani Community College, and Chair of the American Sign Language Program at Northeastern University. Jane K. Fernandes resides in Asheville, North Carolina.
