With a wide range of articles published in such newspapers and magazines as the Wall Street Journal, GQ, Parenting, Texas Monthly, and Spin, journalist Jim Shahin has accumulated numerous accolades for his work. For more than 30 years, Jim Shahin has upheld the highest standards of quality and excellence as a writer and reporter, counting several newsroom positions at the Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Chronicle, and American Way Magazine among his formative experiences.
From 1988 to 2008, Jim Shahin functioned in a variety of roles for American Way Magazine, beginning as Senior Editor and eventually writing a regular humor column, a popular feature of American Airlines’ biweekly in-flight magazine. Jim Shahin’s individual columns earned syndication in national newspapers and were reprinted in several books, including Profiles of Popular Culture—A Reader and The Writer’s Workplace: Essays. During this period, Jim Shahin also taught journalism at the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications and wrote a column for Chile Pepper magazine.
As Visiting Assistant Professor at Syracuse University's prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications for the 2003 winter semester and 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 academic years, Jim Shahin taught graduate and undergraduate students. With a primary focus on magazine journalism, Jim Shahin shared his expertise through such courses as Magazine Editing, Advanced Magazine Editing, and Magazine Article Writing. Promoting a pragmatic approach to journalism, Jim Shahin assisted students with marketplace strategies, cover design, magazine creation, and more. In addition, Jim Shahin served as Guest Lecturer in Creative Nonfiction for the low-residency MFA program at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and as Faculty Adviser on a magazine development project at the University of Maryland 's Robert H. Smith School of Business.
At Chile Pepper Magazine from January 2001 to September 2004, Jim Shahin contributed a lifestyle and food column geared towards enthusiasts of spicy cuisine. A member of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Journalism Education Association (JEA), Jim Shahin holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and a teaching certificate from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
