San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Munks is responsible for the management of the 600-person agency that upholds community safety for San Mateo County. Gregory Munks leverages over 30 years of experience in law enforcement toward his current position. Gregory Munks began his career in 1975 as a Reserve Police Officer for the Palo Alto Police Department. After two years in this role, Gregory Munks advanced to the position of Deputy Sheriff for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Demonstrating exceptional leadership abilities, Gregory Munks was promoted to Lieutenant, assuming the duties of Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Burglary Suppression Detective, Robbery/Homicide Investigator, and Manager of Crime Prevention Division, among others. Gregory Munks additionally spent time as a Human Resources Manager for the City of Palo Alto, learning the business aspects of city government before returning to law enforcement as Undersheriff of San Mateo County in 1993.
While serving as Undersheriff, Gregory Munks garnered valuable experience assisting the Sheriff with the management of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. From internal affair, records management, and personnel training to investigations, narcotics enforcement, and bomb detection and disposal, Gregory Munks exerted his deep knowledge and expertise over every aspect of law enforcement. Recognized community-wide for his commitment to exercise change in San Mateo County, Gregory Munks was elected to the office of Sheriff in June 2006, a position he continues to hold today.
A graduate of Golden Gate University, Gregory Munks earned his Master of Business Administration in 1995. Gregory Munks also possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the Menlo School of Business Administration.
Outside of work, Bay Area native Gregory Munks enjoys traveling, playing golf, skiing, and spending time with his wife and children.
