As the Founder and President of Heart2Heart, Hilary Gushwa devotes her time to fundraising for the expansion of the National Marrow Donor Program and increasing awareness of the causes and treatment for Leukemia. Hilary Gushwa founded Heart2Heart in 1999, and over the years, she has raised more than $55,000 and inspired hundreds of people to register with the National Marrow Donor Program. Four Leukemia patients are now cancer free after receiving bone marrow transplants from four new donors found at various bone marrow drive hosted by Hilary. Hilary Gushwa’s passion, dedication, and creativity have helped educate the public about leukemia and its treatment, and she has had a life-changing impact on leukemia patients and their families. Hilary Gushwa is also the Miss California International 2009. As Miss California International, Hilary acts as a spokeswoman for both Heart2Heart and the California International Pageant platform: the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” campaign. She makes many public appearances and speeches promoting the programs to new audiences, and she will represent the state of California at the 2009 Miss International Pageant in Chicago, Illinois. Hilary Gushwa’s tireless volunteerism has earned her numerous accolades. The Moorpark Chamber of Commerce awarded her with the “Volunteer of the Year Award” in 2005, and in 2007, President Bush honored her with the “Call to Service Award” for dedicating over 4,000 hours to community service. In early 2008, she was nominated for the L’Oreal Paris “Women of Worth Award”, and in October of 2008 she will be both a walker and featured speaker for the Ventura County Chapter of the American Heart Association’s Heart Start Walk. Hilary Gushwa’s work with a wide variety of charities, in addition to her own, demonstrates her commitment to community service and improving society as a whole.
Hilary Gushwa attends California State University, Northridge, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology. In her free time, she is an active member of the Swarovski Crystal Society and enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Hilary Gushwa currently lives in Southern California.
