Benjamin Straight has consistently shown exemplary performance in every aspect of his life. Beginning with academics, in May 2001, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Radford University, with a major in Spanish and a minor in sociology, and a cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0. He continued his studies at the University of South Florida and obtained his Master’s degree in sociology in 2003, also graduating with honors. He was a constant fixture on the Dean’s List for Academics at Radford University, having appeared on it spring 1998, 1999, and 2000, and fall 1999.
Not only did Mr. Straight wholeheartedly commit himself to his studies, he also devoted his time to extracurricular activities that further enhanced his academic career. For example, Mr. Straight took on a Teaching Assistantship two years in a row, the academic years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. He also joined a study-abroad program during Summer 2000, whereby he lived with a native family in Costa Rica in order to advance his Spanish skills.
Mr. Straight’s work experience is excellent as well. From 2003 to 2005, he served as an Assistant Battalion S-2 Intelligence Officer in the US Army, where he assisted in supervising a three-person section. In addition to his military position, he has also held a variety of academic jobs. At Pike's Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, taught Sociology of Deviant Behavior and Introduction to Sociology 2. From 2001 to 2003, he held a teaching assistant position at the University of South Florida in which he assisted faculty in teaching undergraduate students. At USF, Mr. Straight also served as a community assistant at its Office of Residential Life, where he was the assistant manager of an apartment complex that housed 65 graduate students. In this position he was the supervisor of five resident assistants on a rotating basis, to whom he offered guidance and support. For these jobs Mr. Straight was trained in conflict management, which involved learning how to execute mediations between residents. At USF, he also worked with an Adjunct Faculty at USF in teaching Sociology of the Family and Introduction to Sociology.
Some of Mr. Straight’s interests include social construction, consumer cultural, classical theory, introduction to sociology. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, investing, reading, and playing video games.
