Combining his faith and passion for education, Terrence F. Neven has successfully changed the face of home schooling in California for the better. Born in Chicago, Illinois, and one of twelve children, Terry’s family relocated to Southern California when he was a teenager. There, Terry attended Saint Anthony’s High School in Long Beach, California. Shortly after his graduation in 1971, he became a born again Christian, and began attending Community Chapel. He went on to attend Southern California Community Bible College, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Theology. Terry spent seventeen years as a pastor before switching to the home school ministry, in 1981. In 1986, he began Sunland Christian School, a national home schooling program, with 24 students.
Since then, Terry has undoubtedly made a significant impact on Southern California’s home school landscape. Offering a variety of home school, home study, independent study, distance learning, and online programs, SCS has served upwards of 3,000 families during its existence. Today, Sunland Christian School continues to expand and grow.
Terry Neven’s commitment to education is clear. For over eight years, Neven was the host and producer of “Educating Our Children,” a weekly radio broadcast about home schooling. He was once invited by Dr. James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, to moderate a home school conference in Arrowhead Springs, California. Legal issues that concern home schooling are Terry’s area of expertise. Terry now writes court briefs for families who face child custody issues, and speaks at a wide range of venues for a variety of functions. Terry Neven has spoken at churches, homeschool conferences, and radio and television talk shows. He offers private consulting to those starting home school programs, and is active in defending home school rights in California.
In his spare time, Terry Neven enjoys reading, camping, watching movies, and playing sports, including basketball, ping pong, walking and jogging. He lives in Southern California with his wife, Laura, a former preschool teacher, as well as Sunland Christian School’s invaluable accountant and record keeper. Terrence Neven is a proud father and grandfather.
