| Oscar L. Beard was born in Bull Connor's Birmingham, Alabama on December 23, 1946. Oscar left A.H. Parker High School in 1962 to complete his high school education while living with a White family in Princeton, New Jersey as part of an interracial educational cross cultural exchange sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee. It was Oscar's Princeton, New Jersey family that paid for him to study speed reading in the fast paced Princeton University community. Oscar attended Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, earing the B.A. Degree in Urban Affairs Studies and also completed a 2-year tour with the United States Peace Corps in Nigeria, West Africa during the Nigerian Civil War. Oscar has served as the only Speed Reading Specialist for the DeKalb County DFCS Independemt Living Program for 5 years. The Reading Doctor 7-Star Speed Reading Technique has helped to propel numerous foster children from failing or near failing grades to the upper quadrant in their reading classes. Oscar is also very effective in working with children with reading or learning disabilities. It begins with a reading assessment.
