II. History and Background of Amalaki
Ayurvedic Roots
-One of the richest histories and legacies of any fruit known today
-A cornerstone of Ayurvedic Medicine, the 5,000 year old medical tradition of India, known as the “Mother of all Healing Systems”
-Ayurveda is a sister-science to Yoga and has become increasingly popular today,
through proponents such as Deepak Chopra M.D.
-Written in the ancient language of Sanskrit, Ayurveda contains the oldest and some of lengthiest medical texts in the world. Modern herbology, detoxification, massage therapy, and even types of medical surgeries find their roots in Ayurveda
-As a system of natural medicine, Ayurveda aims to establish balance in all areas of life. Nutrition and lifestyle considerations, such as, sleep, exercise, and stress are fundamental components of Ayurveda.
-The ancient texts of Ayurveda describe over 5,000 herbs and fruits in great detail. Amalaki is considered the most effective ‘rejuvenative’ agent in the plant kingdom and is heralded as a “medicinal panacea’ due to its large number of healing properties.
-For centuries, Amalaki has been fondly referred to as Dhatri, meaning the ‘Nurse’, because it nourishes so many aspects of health.
-Amalaki is highly regarded in Ayurveda for promoting Ojas- or the end product of perfect digestion- which leads to radiant health, shining eyes, skin, and hair, and youthful aging.
-Due to its rich heritage in the Indian culture, the Amalaki tree is celebrated every November on day of the full moon, in accordance with the harvesting season. Families gather under nearby trees, while sharing a picnic lunch and giving thanks for the bounty of the trees. Folklore says that even just sitting under an Amalaki tree will lead to greater vitality, strength, and overall health.
-While nutritional supplements are relatively new in the West, Amalaki has formed the foundation of Chavanprash, a paste-like supplement, widely used in India for centuries for strengthening the immune system. It is also one of three primary ingredients in Triphala, a primary detoxifying formulation of Ayurveda.
III. Growing and Processing of Our Amalaki
-Organic, Wildcrafted Amalaki grown in Northern India, known as the “lap of the Himalayas”
“Organic” refers to fruits that are not grown with and chemical pesticides or herbicides or genetically modified ingredients
“Wildcrafted” refers to a harvesting technique in which the Amalaki fruits are harvested from trees as they are naturally found in nature, as opposed to harvesting from large fields that are planted only with Amalaki tress (called ‘mono-cropping’). The latter are shown to be nutritionally less potent or inferior to wildcrafted varieties.
-At over 5,000 feet elevation, Northern India is considered to have some of the purest air and cleanest water on the planet.
-The soil is particularly nutrient-dense, due to glacial run off from the Himalayan mountain range.
-The Amalaki has been gathered by natives in accordance with traditional harvesting traditions and in alignment with seasonal rhythms.
-The Amalaki has been cold pressed and vacuum dried using a proprietary method,
which preserves the nutritional and energetic integrity of the plant.
-The Growing, Harvesting, and Processing of the Amalaki is both Environmentally
Conscious and Sustainable
