Profile
I am inspired by colour, movement and texture – and believe that a good dose of humour is very important in certain aspects of my work. I mainly use oils and acrylics on stretched linen or linen board, sometimes using my own handmade paper and various fabrics for texture beneath the paint. Most of my work is done with palette knives and brushes but I also use sponges, my fingers, pieces of cardboard, paper table napkins and scrunched plastic. In fact, whatever is to hand at the moment of need!
As a 'colourist' my paintings are generally of the cheerful variety, usually with layers of colour built up, often allowing the lower layer to show through, giving movement and life to the painting.
I prefer art to be a representation of my subject – using more imagination and freedom of colour and movement to bring it to life, than realism and perfection.
Once the painting is finished it's important for me to be impelled to look at it again and again and to feel the excitement of pleasure in what has been created – otherwise I paint over it again!
