Profile
Motivated by a commitment to healthy living, Gary Salmirs has revolutionized his life, and he pursues a mission to help others do the same. Once an overweight man struggling with nutrition and exercise, Gary Salmirs had a life-changing experience when he was admitted to the hospital for a clogged blood vessel. Rather than writing off this health risk, Gary Salmirs endeavored to change his life through exercise and nutrition. He eschewed the fad diets that had never worked for him, saw a nutritionist, and began eating healthy, whole foods. He also began a consistent exercise plan that included regular running.
Unfortunately, as Gary Salmirs knew, he was not alone in his struggles with health and weight. In fact, approximately 68 percent of Americans are overweight, and 34 percent are obese. Moreover, weight and wellness issues in lower-income communities are often even more serious. With this in mind, Gary Salmirs decided to create an effective, friendly, and accessible Wellness Program for families in these communities.
Covering a range of health and nutrition topics, the program incorporates hands-on activities such as cooking classes and provides materials in both English and Spanish. Both course materials and the Foundation’s website at www.ironwillfoundation.com offer healthy recipes for favorite dishes, such as black bean and sweet potato enchiladas, sweet and sour chicken with pasta, oven fried sesame chicken, chipotle chili with black beans and corn, garlic shrimp with brown rice and spinach, and sun-dried tomato hummus. Gary Salmirs' Ironwill Foundation also supports other causes, most notably by raising funds for research on hereditary neurological diseases. In fact, the Ironwill Foundation’s spin-a-thon recently raised $72,000 for the cause.
